Shouldn't Heath Ledger be nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role?

I was outraged to discover he was only up for best supporting actor. The Dark Knight wouldn't have been half as good if Jim Carrey or Russel Crowe (Thank God he didn't) had played the Joker.
