What exactly is an empire? what do they do?

I do live in a glorious empire myself its called the United States and we are slowly taking over the world but i hear about other empires the romans the mayans the aztecs the russians the british the germans but what exactly do these empires get or what do the rulers or people gain from having an empire what are the rewards of being an empire?
